Kumana National Park

 

which is famous as a birds paradise both for the native and migrant birds is situated within the Lahugala and Siyambalanduwa Divisional Secretariats in Ampara and Monaragala districts. Kumbukkan Oya which is the Southern boundary of the Kumana National Park, extending over an area of 35,664.74ha is also the Southern boundary of Ruhunu (Yala) National Park.

 It is a distinct character that the Sri Lankan native species such as Leopard, Bear, Elephant, Black-necked Stork, Estuarine Crocodile (Geta Kimbula), and Leatherback Turtle which had been able to attract the majority of tourists; can be seen in this national park.

 01. From Colombo; passing, Ratnapura, Pelmadulla, Udawalawe, Thanamalwila, Buttala, Monaragala, Siyambalanduwa, Pottuvil and Panama.

 02. From Kandy; via Dahaata wanguwa; passing Mahiyanganaya, Bibile, Monaragala, Siyambalanduwa, Pottuvil and Panama.

 03. From Polonnaruwa; passing Baticaloa, Kalmunei, Akkareipattu, Thirukkovil, Pottuvil and Panama.

A Ramsar wetland Kumana

 

The Ramsar Convention on the internationally important wetland has declared this national park as the 5" international Ramsar wetland on 29"h October 2010, having taken into consideration the importance of the wetlands in the park as well as the animal inhabitants living around. The special wetland ecosystem in the Kumana National Park is Kumana Villuwa. Apart from that, fresh water tanks, rivers, lagoons, estuaries and water holes can be mentioned as other wetland ecosystems

 

Vegetation Types Kumana

 

The dominant vegetation type within the park IS the dry mixed evergreen forests. Grasslands, natural sand dunes, river basin ecosystems, coastal ecosyste mangroves can be identified among other eco systems.
